4/19 The Sound of Music Notes

Act 1

Nuns: all should have flat black shoes

Maria:  don’t enter while the nuns are on stage.

Mr. Kays:  the cue right after Maria sings The Sound of Music was the cue I was telling you about that only need to be about 10 seconds

Names nuns:  listen carefully to the music if you get off track.  Ordinarily Mr. Kays will be able to get the orchestra to the right place but it might be like tonight where he’s “flying blind”.

Named nuns:  watch your spacing.  You should be evenly spaced.

Crew: can we streamline setting up Maria’s screen and suitcase?

Freiderick:  You’ll need to gel/style your hair.  Let me know if you have any questions.

Freiderick and Kurt:  You’ll need all-black shoes.  Do you have some?  If not, we can look in the costume room.

Gretl:  when Maria speaks to you, look her in the face.

Kids:  good job on the choreography

Crew:  what is hanging over down stage right?  It looks like some cable.

Rolf:  needs black socks

Sound: Who is controlling the volume of the pit?  It seems louder tonight?

Mr. Kays:  right after 16/17 we could use another 8-16 measures, or so, of music to cover the scene change.

Frau Schmidt:  feel free to futz with the bed as much as you want during your scene with Maria (straightening the comforter, fluffing pillows etc)

Mr. Kays: M after the wrong cue for the thunder we could hear laughing/talking over the sound system.

Mr. Kays:  the thunder sounds odd, like it’s being cut off before it finishes.

Franz:  you need black shoes

Sound:  frequently the mics seems to be “off” as actors enter and start their lines and it takes a few words before we can hear them.

All: who wants to be the “understudies” for the Sangerbund 3?  Only one person spoke specifically to me.

Max:  if you start singing, just commit to it.

Sound:  the mic was going out on Max, and eventually for Elsa as well.

Mr. Kays:  does the orchestra support the kids when they first start singing the reprise of The Sound of Music?

Kids:  make sure you look sincere as you hug your dad after he sings.  For a couple the hug looked awkward.

Kids:  make sure you say your lines when you enter.  Also, take your time.  I cut some of the music out of that scene, but then you didn’t have enough music, so it’s been added back in so you have A LOT of music before the curtain opens.

Costumes:  are the party guests not wearing ball gowns?

Sound:  Max and Elsa’s mics are going in and out.  Do you know why?

Costumes:  Would men be wearing hats inside for the ball?

Kids:  your line up for So Long Farewell was not uniform.  Keep the same amount of space between each of you.

Mr. Kays:  Expect that Gretl will start her solo too soon.

All:  you should have your hair as you’ll be wearing it in the show for final dress rehearsal.

Maria:  do you have time to put your postulant dress back on for the end of Act 1?  I realized it looks weird that the new postulant comes up, you take your dress, yet you still have the other.

Costumes:  Will the men have ties?

Act 2

Mr. Kays:  the tempo on “No Way to Stop It “ was slower tonight, though it did eventually pick up.

Nuns:  Your best “Gaudeamus” yet.  “Bonus” points for you.

Kids:  For then scene when your folks are returning, we had all but one of you on the couch.  Can we mix up that stage picture a little more by having a couple on the floor?

Kids:  Jeremy Dirkx will be in at 3:45 to play backing tracks so that you can practice a couple of your costume changes tomorrow.  If possible, please come in for about an hour to run those changes as much as possible. If possible, we can can try this also on Thursday before your show.

All:  Reminder that everyone should have black shoes and men should have black socks. If you don’t have black shoes, let’s look through our stock to see what we can find for you.

Maria:  If you don’t have a different dress to wear when you first return with the Captain, let’s plan on having you in a coat to cover up the concert dress.

Maria:  don’t forget to sing at the reprise of Do Re Me.

Mr. Kays:  let’s slow down Edelweiss a click.

Mr. Kays:  Is there a particular cue when Max says “Play something” at the end of the concert?

Von Trapps:  take more time getting ready before you exit, so that you’re climbing the stairs and leaving at the end versus so quickly.

Crew:  the set needs to change more quickly for the curtain call.

All:  hurry out for your bow.  We don’t want them to get tired of clapping and stop before the curtain call is done.
