4/15 rehearsal
4/15 The Sound of Music Rehearsal
Act 1
All: Starting Monday, be sure to check your props roughly 30 minutes after you arrive. Be sure to tell Sierra Smith if you can’t find your prop.
All: If the wrong music comes from the orchestra, try not to show it on your face:)
Mr. Kays: the bells were very quiet
1st sopranos: don’t scoop up to the high note.
Mr. Kays: “The Sound of Music” started a second too soon. The nuns first are calling Have you seen Maria? Maria? Right before the song starts.
All: make sure you’re following Mr. Kays as he directs.
Curtain: once you start opening it, don’t stop.
Mr. Kays: what happened with the start of “Maria”?
Mr. Kays: are we missing musicians? It sounds “thin” at times, as if something is missing.
Main nuns: make sure your hands come together on “How”.
Main nuns: don’t forget to raise your hands on “How do you hold a moonbeam…”
Anyone who makes the sign of the cross: Make sure you watch the video Chrisse posted on the blog regarding how to do it properly.
Mr. Kays: reminder, once Maria says “ I have been given permission to sing” then “I Have Confidence” starts.
Frau Schmidt: slow down the rate of your speech a bit and hyper-articulate.
Kids: some of your faces looked sad during the couch part of Do Re Mi, instead of being happy.
Liesl: make sure you give Rolf a “wait a minute” gesture before you start your verse, to give him a reason to sit.
Mr. Kays: Jeremy was saying “Bam” when the percussion should be making the sound of thunder. Will percussion being doing this or do we need a sound effect?
Kids: as you got off the bed in “Goatherd” you were pretty low energy. Make sure you’re staying in character, having fun with Maria during the storm.
Mr. Kays: Do we need more light for the Gretl cue?
Ursula: don’t break character
Props: what is the paper on the plate of treats?
Franz and Captain: great job with the coffee pass off.
Captain/Max/Franz: Franz saying “Herr Detweiller” is the cue for you to drop Max.
Captain: does the line read “the children” or “my children” have been seen running….? You said “the children”.
Captain/Maria: instead of the Captain angrily crossing to Maria, Maria should be the one crossing/on the offensive.
Kids: make sure you’re following Mr. Kays on the monitor as he conducts you at the start of your reprise of “The Sound of Music”.
Kids: when your dad hugs you all, look like it’s not awkward and that it makes you happy.
Crew: don’t come into the Maria/Elsa scene until the lights go out.
Curtain: the curtain opened too soon.
Do we know where Baroness Elberfeld is?
Who wants to dance with Henry? Anyone who identifies as female and knows the waltz can do it. Please see me and let me know.
Ursula: as Elberfeld and Zeller fight, walk around asking people if they want snacks.
Captain: go up the stairs to give Frau Schmidt the brandy and look like you’re about to leave when you see Maria and Kurt.
Mr. Kays: I’m not hearing the melody during the Landler. Is someone gone tonight?
Mr. Kays: what do we do about all the extra music after Elsa says “Children, now”? Does Elsa need to wait?
Kids: I can only hear Leisl singing
Nuns: your entrance was stronger tonight. Keep it up.
Act 2
Where was Max?
ALL: From now on you cannot break character for any reason. Get in the habit of covering.
Kids: I can’t her you sing during Lonely Goatherd and I see you doing things like playing with your fingers/doing things that are not in character. Think of what your character would do at this point.
Max: make sure you we can tell you are surprised to see Captain and Elsa come in, and are trying to cover for the fact that you had them singing.
Maria and kids: more joy when Maria comes back.
Maria: I might have misheard but it sounded like you said, “Only until you can find a new postulant.”
Mr. Kays: parts of “No Way to Stop It” were very quiet.
Max: I liked the “sun” and your standing on the bench.
Captain/Franz: I could not hear Franz’ line “Your call from Berlin”.
Captain: don’t we all like to go on vacation for our holidays? :)
Captain: You’re starting to throw away the tail end of your lines. Make sure you give every word its due.
Captain: I did not understand, “You’ll find that’s very different too.”
Sister Sofia/Lucy: you entered too soon.
Mr. Kays; can we pick up the tempo for the instrumental Act 2 Sc 2, leading up to when they put the robe on Mother Abbess?
Sister Berte: We need the business with the suitcase (nightgown and mirror) to happen quicker.
Mother Abbess: Remember to end the sign of the cross with prayer hands (see the video Chrisse posted)
Props: we need a pillow to set the Captain’s hat on.
Nuns: the “Confitemni/Alleluia” was stronger tonight. What a “bonus” that is;)
ALL: always be ready to cover. There have been several times when I could tell people were waiting for a line to be read. Adlib physically when needed.
Maria/Leisl/Mr. Kays: can we pick up the tempo a bit for the 16/17 Reprise? It felt slow to me.
Zeller should have the program in his hands when he refers to the VonTrapp family singers etc.
Kids: You (particularly Kurt and Marta) were not making physical choices that made sense for your characters as they stood waiting to sing. Always be in character.
Kurt and Marta: directly exit at the music festival versus the turning thing you did.
Gretl: don’t slow down as you sing your solo.
Props: the flashlights look great. Go ahead and paint them black. I have spray paint in my office.
All: I’ll be teaching you the curtain call Monday before we start the show.
Rolf: make sure we can tell that the flashlight hits the family first, then Leisl.
All: the finale still needs help, but it’s getting there.
